Gum surgery may be recommended for both health and aesthetic reasons. The most common reason is to treat advanced gum disease, which can damage gum tissue, lead to tooth loss, and cause serious oral infections. In other cases, gum surgery may be used to reshape the gumline and reduce the appearance of a “gummy” smile.
At Maison Dental, our dental professionals and oral surgeons provide gum surgery in a supportive, patient-focused setting. We use modern techniques to help reduce discomfort and support both the health and appearance of your smile.
Gum surgery isn't just one procedure but includes several types of operations. One of the more common surgeries is a flap procedure while one of the more complicated procedures is a gum graft.
Gum grafting involves taking tissue from the mouth roof to restore diseased gum tissue.
You will be on a soft foods diet. Avoid brushing the surgery area during toothbrushing. Pain relievers will be needed. You will need to limit smoking, alcohol consumption, and strenuous physical activity.
Stitches will start to biodegrade and scabs will begin to heal. You will need a follow-up with your oral surgeon or dentist. You can begin to eat more normally but avoid overly spicy foods. Continue to avoid smoking and alcohol. You may brush the area gently during tooth brushing.
Continue resuming a normal diet and lifestyle but avoid activity that strains the surgical area. You may need another dental follow-up to remove stitches if they haven't fallen out or been removed.
Return to a normal oral hygiene routine. That includes toothbrushing and flossing the surgical area. Be aware of any changes and report those to your dentist.
